The Evolution of Fashionable Glasses

It has been almost four centuries since the glasses were invented, but it was only a long time after they were used frequently. At first, women who needed to use them could not display them in public, and the frames were almost always uncomfortable and awkward. To buy a pair it was necessary to wait for the items to be brought by international travelers and it was not possible to make one tailored to each face and degree of need. Whatever fell best or helped the vision in a certain way was chosen.

The Evolution of Fashionable Glasses

Nowadays, both sunglasses and sunglasses have become sophisticated products, having not only an auxiliary function in the health of the eyes but also gained luxury object status. The number of models is enormous, as is the variation of lens types and raw material. Some brands charge real fortunes for their peers, more and more beautiful! If you are part of the eyeglass class, check out a little more about the history of this particular object and also what is the best model for you.

The Glasses of the 1900s

Until the 1920s, there were several models of unisex glasses. And if they served so much to men and women, there was not much to choose from … Round, square faces, eyes far apart or closer together, everyone had to adapt to their glasses.

This was the time of the famous pince-nez (which you must have seen in period films out there …). The name, from French, means something like “pinching”, “pinching” the nose. In fact, it had no rods, being snugly snug in the nose. There!

Already the Lorgnette model became famous for being the “opera glasses”, that people used the accessory especially to go to the theater. It had a folding rod and assorted models for both men and women. Some were made of precious stones and even precious metals. The more ornate the pair, the greater the “importance” of the person in society.

Shortly after, the most similar glasses we know of today have begun to appear. The lenses (always round) supported by stems that fit the ear quickly gained the sympathy of the people, since they were a little easier and comfortable to use.

The 30’s

With the popularization of round lenses, the manufacture of glasses began to evolve more and more, as the first plastic materials were fragile and flammable.

The first Ray Ban sunglasses ever made were invented at the request of American Air Force aircraft pilots who complained of migraines caused by too much sunlight while working. At that time there was then the creation of dark lenses that protected the eyes from the sun and also banned the sun’s rays.

The idea was so genius that, after a few years of great success, the product was released to the general public, turning fashion fast.

The charming glasses of the 50’s and 60’s

During this time, the glasses began to follow fashion trends. The frames became more delicate and feminine and the great sensation was the one that combined metal and plastic the same product with the possibility of creating a product with drawing: the famous browline skirted the lenses only at the top, imitating the eyebrow design.

It was also at this time that cat eye glasses definitely conquered women around the world thanks to their popularization in the cinema.

The comfortable 60 and 70 sunglasses

With glasses increasingly fashionable, it was already expected that the vibe of peace and love of the following decades would also come with full force. The glasses had geometric frames and almost always with strong futuristic appeal in black and white. The style known as bug eye bore huge lenses and quickly became fashionable.

In contrast, the frames of the next generation were lighter, though they were also large. And the colors took over once more the glasses that came to be manufactured following the hippie line that took care of the youth of the time.

The glasses of the 80’s: exaggeration and color

The 1980s brought a loaded fashion: heavy hair and makeup and clothes that blended densities of fabrics and accessories made this decade one of the most “exaggerated” of all time. The sunglasses were used all the time, even in places with little (or no!) Solar lighting and they represented a lot of style.

Previous trends have joined, and it has become common to see endless color frames, made with all types of materials and in the most diverse formats. The wrap arounds – a contouring pattern that fit the face – became feverish and stretched into the mid-1990s.

The first decade of 2000: glasses for all styles

With the arrival of the new century, hundreds of new manufacturers began to bet each one on their own side, producing not only glasses of degree as well as sunglasses with own and modern characteristics .. We arrived at a time in which, basically, who defines your style when it comes to dressing, buying and wearing glasses  is you. Some trends come and go and the possibility of using what fits you best, what seems more comfortable, colorful or discreet is enormous. That is why the first decade of the 21st century is a true mix of previous trends. Nowadays, you can choose the frame that you like most and match your face, follow your own style or even follow some fashion manufacturer in particular, since each year, new designs are created and there is still the possibility to acquire a pair for every occasion and never lose the style!
