Cabo Verde 2014
Cape Verde. On a visit to Cape Verde, Andris Piebalgs, EU Commissioner responsible for development and development assistance, announced that the European Union will spend EUR 55 million on, among other things, environmentally friendly energy production in the EU by 2020. In this way, Cape Verde will hopefully achieve the set goal that half of the country’s energy needs in 2020 will come from renewable sources.
According to Countryaah.com, Cabo Verde population in 2020 is estimated at 555,998. The focus on tourism, which in recent decades has grown to become one of Cape Verde’s most important sources of income, continued during the year. In November, the country’s largest hotel to date was opened with over 1,100 rooms on the island of Sal.
At the end of the same month, up to 1,000 people were forced to temporarily leave their homes after the eruption of Pico do Cano on the island of Fogo, the first since 1995.
