After three years of legal battle over land ownership, the Australian company Axiom Mining won the right to exploit the large nickel deposit on the island of Santa Isabel. China is expected to become the major market for nickel exports.
In August, US Secretary of State John Kerry came on a short visit to the Solomon Islands. It was the first time a US Secretary of State visited the island nation, which meant a lot to the United States during World War II. The Battle of the Island of Guadalcanal was a turning point in the Pacific War between the Allies and Japan. Kerry pledged US support to deal with the effects of climate warming in the region.
In August, local authorities in the provincial capital of Choiseul on the island of Taro decided that the city should be relocated to a larger island due to rising sea levels due to climate warming. The Taro atoll reaches less than 2 meters above sea level, and its vulnerability to storms and tsunamis is expected to increase in the future.
