Azerbaijan is a transcontinental country located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia, situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south, Azerbaijan’s capital and largest city is Baku. The country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has since followed a path of political and economic development. Azerbaijan is a presidential republic, and as of my last update, Ilham Aliyev has been serving as the President since 2003, succeeding his father Heydar Aliyev. The political landscape is dominated by the New Azerbaijan Party (Yeni Azərbaycan Partiyası), which has been the ruling party, holding a significant majority in the National Assembly (Milli Məclis). The country faced a protracted conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, and a ceasefire agreement was reached in 2020 following a brief war that saw Azerbaijan regain control over significant territories. Azerbaijan has a developing economy largely driven by oil and gas resources, but the government has been working to diversify sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and technology. The nation’s strategic location, as well as its role in the global energy market, has contributed to its geopolitical significance.
